Bodyguard of Iloilo mayoral bet shot dead
ILOILO — A bodyguard of a mayoral candidate in Banate, Iloilo was shot dead Sunday.
The victim was identified as Jerry Omes, who sustained a fatal gun shot wound in the stomach. Omes is the bodyguard of Carlos Cabangal, who is currently running for the mayoral post in Banate.
Authorities identified the suspect as Rolyn Duco, a member of the Philippine Army.
Based on the investigation, Duco went to the police station Sunday afternoon saying that he was shot. But when the Banate police verified the report, it was found out that Duco first fired a gun against Omes, which resulted to the victim’s death.
Recovered from the crime scene was a .38 caliber revolver, a leather gun holster and five empty shell casings of a .38 caliber weapon.
The investigation revealed that an old grudge triggered the suspect to shoot at Omes.
However, Cabangal is convinced that the incident was politically motivated because the suspect is the brother-in-law of barangay captain Roger Belarde, a supporter of Cabangal’s opponent.
